Campus Profile

The University of Minnesota, Twin Cities is one of the largest campuses in the U.S., with over 50,000 students. Nearly 4700 classes are offered annually in over 160 undergraduate academic programs. The U of M is generally ranked amongst the top 10 public research institutions in the US, & contributing to the U of M's academic prestige are 20 Nobel Laureates, 86 Guggenheim Fellows, and 2 MacArthur "Geniuses" on campus right now! As a land-grant institution, the U of M has a strong tradition of education and public service. It is a member of the Big Ten conference of the NCAA.

The park-like main campus of the U of M is nestled in the heart of the "Twin Cities" of Minneapolis & St. Paul and dissected by the Mississippi River. The "Cities", with a population over 2 million, are recognized as centers for the arts with nationally acclaimed theaters, museums, & a vibrant music scene. Winter's are snowy & cold, but the majority of the year is mild and beautiful.

Helpful Information - We are "open" on Plan A, so your acceptance is basically guaranteed under that Plan! We are "even" on Plan B, so your acceptance is not guaranteed under that Plan...either be willing to come on Plan A or have some strong back-up school choices.

Don't worry if you are accepted without on-campus housing...there are many, many rental houses and apartments within walking distance to campus.

Closed Programs
Apparel, graphic design, and interior design are closed. Professional journalism courses are closed. Some upper-division Business courses are closed. Nursing courses are closed. Chemical Engineering and Materials Science are closed.

Limitations
Some courses in the architecture major are open - students desiring to take architecture classes must be a declared architecture major on their home campus. Courses offered through the College of Education and Human Development have limited space for NSE students. Students wishing to take business courses must have a minimum 3.0 GPA. Upper division (3000 level and above) courses for Microbiology and Neuroscience. Students should have access to lower division courses within the College of Science and Engineering as long as they have the appropriate prerequisites completed...they must work with each department to register. Psychology, Spanish, Photography, upper-division Economics, and American Studies courses are in high demand and space may not be available. Music, Theater, and Dance courses may require audition.

Financial Aid
Plan A
For Plan A U.S. students, aid is awarded by and disbursed from your host campus. Students apply for federally funded financial aid by using the FAFSA code of their host campus. Host campuses award aid to incoming Plan A students on a first-come, first-served basis as long as funds are available. Ask your home campus NSE coordinator if your campus awards aid to their own outgoing students. If so, do not apply for aid from your host campus.
