The University of Southern Maine with two campuses offers students the experience of a metropolitan city and the charm of a New England village. Portland was ranked as one of the most livable cities by Outside magazine and Forbes. We are fortunate to host a wide array of beautiful beaches as well as plenty of opportunity for outdoor activities including hiking, skiing and more! With just under 10,000 students USM has a dedicated and accessible faculty and staff. Classes average 22 students and USM has a student faculty ratio of 15 to 1. Residence halls are located in Gorham while students take classes in both Gorham and Portland. USM offers a wide variety of sports, outdoor activities and student clubs to help you enjoy your time at USM. Portland is just 2 hours from Boston and New York and Canada are also close by. We believe one semester in Maine and you will understand why Maine's unofficial slogan is "Maine, the way life should be!"

Campus Location - Location, location, location! Portland was recently named one of Frommer’s Top 12 World Travel destinations, which makes for a college experience filled with discovery and opportunity.

Helpful Information - After a semester in Maine, your students won’t be surprised why Maine’s unofficial slogan is Maine: The Way Life Should Be! Its proximity to the Atlantic Ocean, mountains, and lakes provide students with recreational opportunities year round. Maine is also fortunate to benefit from four glorious seasons, including a colorful fall and beautiful summer. While other parts of the country simply turn cold in the winter, Maine benefits from picturesque snowfall that is perfect for outdoor activities.

Financial Aid
Plan A
For Plan A U.S. students, aid is awarded by and disbursed from your host campus. Students apply for federally funded financial aid by using the FAFSA code of their host campus. Host campuses award aid to incoming Plan A students on a first-come, first-served basis as long as funds are available. Ask your home campus NSE coordinator if your campus awards aid to their own outgoing students. If so, do not apply for aid from your host campus.
