Notable Academic Programs
Earth Science - It is an exciting time to major in Physics, Meteorology or Earth Systems Science at JSU. Our department is becoming the country's primary source of African Americans who hold B.S. degrees in geosciences. JSU is the only Historically Black College or University presently offering a degree in Earth Systems Science. Nationally, our atmospheric sciences program has produced one of every four African Americans who hold bachelor degrees in meteorology. Our meteorology graduates hold highly visible positions on television with The Weather Channel, WLBT, and WJTV. Many of our majors continue on to graduate studies and have received degrees from MIT, Perdue, Georgia Tech, Howard University, Cornell, University of Michigan, and the University of Oklahoma, to name a few. We seek bright, talented, and dedicated students to develop into tomorrow's researchers, science teachers, corporate managers, high-tech entrepreneurs, and engineers. Chemistry - Welcome to one of the top chemistry departments in the country that produces the 3rd in Bachelor’s, 2nd in Master’s, and 3rd in Doctoral degrees in Physical Sciences (mainly chemistry) awarded to African Americans in the country (Diverse Issues in Higher Education). The Department, with its 20 outstanding and diverse faculty members, offers BS, MS, and PhD degree programs. The BS degree program has been certified by the American Chemical Society since 1973 with several career options: biomedical science, environmental science, forensic science, pre-medicine, pre-dentistry, pre-pharmacy, and pre-engineering. Students trained through our programs receive excellent preparation for graduate and professional schools and careers in industry, academia, and government. In fact, 72% BS/MS graduates went on to graduate or professional schools within one year of graduation.Biology/Life Science - The Department of Biology is an integral component in the vibrant and esteemed College of Science, Engineering and Technology at Jackson State University, the urban university of Mississippi. Jackson State University (JSU), designated by the Carnegie Foundation as a research-intensive university, offers more than 90 bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degree programs. Biology is an exciting discipline, especially since it is the basic science of life and the foundation of life science studies. Also, biological sciences study programs and preparations are integral to specific health professions and careers. Courses in Biology serve as stepping stones for students preparing for careers in basic science research, medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, biotechnology, biomedical engineering, environmental and marine sciences, in addition to many health-related disciplines and professions Mass Communication - The Jackson State University Department of Mass Communications is a part of the School of Communications in the College of Liberal Arts. It is located on the first floor of the Mississippi e-Center @ JSU, 1230 Raymond Road.
