Our society has become both restless and mobile. Students are not content to stay in one place and grow roots. There is a developing sense of wanting new experiences fostered by what they see and hear via television and the Internet. There are a multitude of options available for new living/learning experiences. One of them is to live and study in a new location. Traditionally, that has been an international site, but increasing numbers are considering relocating within the confines of the United States and Canada. Instead of crossing oceans, NSE students cross state, regional, provincial, and cultural borders in order to:

• take courses not available on their home campuses,
• expand their academic program options,
• acquire life skills,
• reside in a different region,
• be exposed to diverse cultural settings,
• seek out graduate and professional schools, and
• explore career options.

When the concept of exchange is mentioned, most of us think international. The truth is that a relatively few students will take that step. For many, studying within the United States and Canada makes more sense. Most of our students will have to move elsewhere after they graduate to find employment or go to graduate school. In many areas of study, it is more practical because of program compatibility and expertise to remain closer to home. Then there is the concern of affordability, ease of arrangements and safety that makes study within the U.S. and Canada attractive. Students are realizing that they don’t have to go overseas to find differences in cultures.

The changing diversity in cultural and racial characteristics across the United States, its territories, and Canada presents numerous challenges and opportunities for tomorrow's citizens and leaders. Recognizing this, the National Student Exchange has developed a membership composed of diverse college and university members, many of which offer distinct cultural experiences. By exchanging to institutions different than their own, students have an opportunity to gain insight into the historical and cultural makeup of different regions, to improve communications skills with individuals from diverse backgrounds, and to prepare themselves to live and work in a culturally diverse society.
